UMF® measures the antibacterial potency of Manuka Honey. Manuka Honey containing this unique antibacterial and antiseptic component is valuable and highly sought after for use against a wide range of bacteria.

But not all Manuka Honey contains this naturally occurring active substance – that property is found in only some (not all) strains. Furthermore, the antibacterial activity level of Manuka Honey varies greatly depending on origin. Some areas do not produce honey with the special antibacterial and antiseptic quality every year, and concentrations of this unique factor can vary from year to year. For this reason, the trademark UMF® – Unique Manuka Factor – was developed to determine the antibacterial strength of every batch of honey, and to help consumers ensure they are not buying honey with little or no antibacterial activity.

Melora is a licensed UMF user.

A UMF® rating indicates the honey contains a high level of the antibacterial component. It must have a UMF® rating of at least 5 before it can carry the UMF® mark. The mark UMF® is followed by a number indicating the strength of activity in a batch of honey – the higher the rating, the more potent the product. Manuka Honey with a UMF® rating of 10 and above is the preferred honey for medical applications such as wound dressing, and other therapeutic use.
